I debated including Portland as it's a renovation rather than a brand-new yard. I know it's going to be substantially upgraded. Same reason I didn't include Vancouver. But those will be stadium solutions, both of them.

Apparently there was a brief period between the opening of the HDC (June 2003) and the groundbreaking on Pizza Hut Park (February 2004). Toyota Park's groundbreaking was in November 2004. I think there has been at least one stadium under construction since February 2004.

They've opened in this order:

Columbus..........1999
Los Angeles.......2003
Dallas............2005
Chicago...........2006
Denver............2007
Toronto...........2007
Salt Lake City....2008
New York..........2010
Philadelphia......2010
Kansas City.......2011? 2012?

What I'm curious about is how long MLS has gone with a stadium under construction somewhere. It seems like it's been pretty much continuous for about 10 years. OK, so, maybe that's a slight exaggeration. HDC broke ground in 2002, so it could very well be 8 years.

I really do find it surreal, having followed the game in the US since '90 or so. Once KC is done, 11 of 16 teams will be in stadiums built for soccer (Chivas is 11). Or 13 of 18 if you throw in Vancouver and Portland. Vancouver may be arguable. All Wolff needs to do now is decide to break ground. That would mean 14. And in the proverbial 60-90 days, Houston could join the party. 15. Leaving just DC, Seattle, and New England.

Great. Now I feel really sad for DC. Probably the most deserving team, and they're going to be the last one to get a stadium, if they ever do.

It's pretty awesome how they were able to get a typical game crowd in to watch the workouts.
