Huh. Didn't know that. (I certainly *should* have, considering I was at the [real] Game 5, which was the last outdoor daytime game in World Series history...)

"MARCH 25, 1985: Circuit Court Judge Richard L. Curry rules to uphold prohibitions against night baseball. Curry criticized Cubs management and Commissioner Peter Ueberroth, who had threatened to deny the Cubs future postseason games at Wrigley Field if lights were not installed."

I *was* aware of this, which happened the following year. I remember thinking of it as an empty threat: trying to force the Cubs out of Wrigley for playoff games surely would've led to an outcry, and probably multiple lawsuits...

(Actually, Bowie Kuhn did it, Ueberroth didn't take over until October 1 that year, and MLB made its decree in August of 1984.)

Ummmmmm...only one problem: As described in the first entry, Commissioner Ueberroth usurped the National League's home field advantage specifically so there would be four prime time games for NBC, not three.

The Padres/Tigers series had no problems beginning in San Diego and having (what would have been) four games there, but the Cubs/Tigers (mythical) series could not have begun in Chicago. Because had the Cubs actually won Game Five against the Padres and made it to the 1984 World Series, Games One and Two (and, if necessary, Six and Seven) would have been played in Detroit, not Chicago.

So, no. You're wrong.

Only one problem: the NL team (the Padres in the real '84 Series) had the home-field advantage, so a Cubs-Tigers Series would've begun in Chicago, not Detroit.

Otherwise, it's cool.

The 1984 Tigers were 57-27 (+20) in the first half of the season and 47-31 (+16) in the second half. They were up 12.5 games on August 22nd and finished 15 games up. August (16-15) was their "worst" month of the season, and they went into August up 12 games and came out of it up 9.5 games.

After the 35-5 (.875) start, they went 69-53 (.566). Even just playing .566 ball all year, they'd have won 92 games and won the East by three games. Nobody can keep up an .875 pace.

I enjoyed your replay if not the outcome. The Cubs were probably the best of the NL teams in 84 with 96n wins. I hate best of five playoffs, and the well might have beaten the Padres in the best of seven. The Tigers were white hot in the first half of the season and built5 a huge lead, but they were pretty average in the second half. In reality I think the Cubs would have made it close. Best wishes, Stan.
