There was something very telling in a media advisory moments ago from Major League Soccer announcing that they’ll announce their 2009 schedule tomorrow at noon ET. They told us something without saying it.
“Wednesday’s announcement will include the national broadcast schedule for the 2009 season including times and dates for games broadcast by Major League Soccer’s national television partners ESPN2/ESPN Deportes, Fox Soccer Channel/Fox Sports en Español and TeleFutura.”
In other words, there goes HDNet. For now, anyway. If memory serves, they jumped in halfway through a season a few years back, so they could do that again. But their contract is up and apparently they couldn’t come to a deal to start the 2009 season.
This will make one of my friends (Mike Segroves) very happy and one (Glenn Davis) very unhappy.

Boy tv networks are just lining up for MLS these days.

Remember, it’s only been in the last few years that they’ve had FSC and HDNet and TeleFutura, so it’s back to the future.

This is depressing news, but it’s hardly surprising. Just look at the commercials they would run on the HDNet broadcasts of MLS. Or, I should say, the LACK of commercials. Almost all of the ads were promos for other HDNet programs. Advertisers are just not interested in this.

I hope Glenn Davis catches on somewhere else; we need him doing commentary on national games in addition to Houston’s local matches.

I’m disappointed. I like Glenn and Marcelo a lot and I’ll admit, the HDNet coverage turned me into a “High Def Snob” as I struggle to watch soccer in standard definition.
Good news: My cable company now charges extra for HDNet - now I have no reason to spend more money.

I agree Chris. No MLS on HDNET = I cancel the subscription to it.
I also got used to Glenn and Marcelo. Nobody knows more about the MLS than those two.
