Idol Speculation: Three’s A Crowd
I was traveling last week and the DVR ate Wednesday’s results show, so I was spared seeing Paula Abdul perform and all the other padding they did to get to the part where Allison Iraheta went home. Last night was the final three. As always, subjective scores, snarky comments and the rankings after the jump.
Double trouble, this was, with the three finalists (Danny Gokey, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert) each singing one song picked for them by the judges (do the math…three finalists…four judges…Randy and Kara ended up combining to dish out one song) and then one of their own choosing. At least no one can bitch about song choice this week.
Danny Gokey (“Dance Little Sister”) – Now you know Paula’s back on painkillers if she’s choosing this song. Did I really need to hear you say doo doo doo doo doo doo doo after 12 weeks of you just yelling at me? No. But I got it anyway. Bo-ring. And why do the pinhead fans in the audience boo like Jet fans at the draft with every even mildly negative comment? This show can’t end quickly enough. Anyway, it sucked, but you can tell that Danny has had enough of Simon by this point. SCORE: 6.0.
Kris Allen (“Apologize”) – I’m at least familiar with this song, a bit. It kept popping up on my Sirius player all last year and I never listened to it. I’m old, what can I tell you? Kara bitched about the song arrangement and then got into it with Simon, which (you would think) pretty much slit her throat when it comes to next year. Anyway, Kris sings really well and it was an unobjectionable performance. SCORE: 7.0.
Adam Lambert (“One”) – Is it just me, or did he look like a Hobbit? Simon picked this song figuring Adam would kill it, and I thought he was going to. Then it just got shrill in the middle, like most things that Adam does. SCORE: 7.0.
So much for judges’ choice. The second round was the performers’ choice.
Danny Gokey (“You Are So Beautiful”) – She may be, but this performance wasn’t. Sounded rushed and not all there. I was waiting for him to yell and to point, and I got half of it, anyway. Might be time to go, Danny. Judges gushed. I didn’t. SCORE: 6.5.
Kris Allen (“Heartless”) – Again, I am an old white guy. Kanye West doesn’t care about me, either, so we’re even. Could there be more echo on this? He’s just more talented than Gokey, let’s just stipulate to that, your honor. This song is craptacular, but he sounded good doing it. SCORE: 8.0.
Adam Lambert (“Crying”) – I was hoping he’d choose this song. That would have been awesome. I was then hoping he wouldn’t scream, but he did. I shuddered to think what the judges would say, and they didn’t disappoint. He got the Pulitzer, the Tony and the Nobel according to them. SCORE: 7.0.
Rankings:
1 – Adam Lambert
2 – Kris Allen
3 – Danny Gokey
Gokey goes tomorrow. Lambert probably wins, but it should be close.
EDIT: It’s Lambert and Allen in the final.
Just for grins, here were my original rankings of the final 12:
1. Danny Gokey……..3rd
2. Lil Rounds………7th
3. Adam Lambert…….in finals
4. Alexis Grace…….12th
5. Matt Giraud……..5th
6. Allison Iraheta….4th
7. Michael Sarver…..10th
8. Scott MacIntyre….8th
9. Kris Allen………in finals
10. Jorge Nunez…….11th
11. Megan Joy………9th
12. Anoop Desai…….6th
I missed pretty badly on Kris Allen, but, then, so did a lot of people. He really snuck up there.
