And You Should Be Thrown Off The Planet

Elizabeth Lambert, junior defender for the University of New Mexico’s women’s soccer team should be red carded for life. Brandon Spikes has gotten the heat lately (deservedly so), but there’s no excuse for this.

Thanks to The Big Lead.

EDIT: She’s been suspended, per golobos.com and KRQE. And, as you could have surmised would have happened, she said “This is in no way indicative of my character or the soccer player that I am.” Actually, it is. You did it. Everything you do is indicative of your character in one way or another.

Of course, once again, YouTube has removed all evidence.

I can almost guarantee you…Elizabeth Lambert will issue or cause to be issued by her school a statement or a soundbite or something that will include the phrase, “that’s not the kind of player I am” or something similar.

Did I call it or what?

“This is in no way indicative of my character or the soccer player that I am.”

Maybe we should organize a collection and purchase this cute little pick-me-up for her.

Lambert deserved the suspension. But does an anonymous women’s college player really deserve this kind of national scrutiny for taking cheap shots in a soccer game? And you do leave out most of the statement and focus on the one lame line.

  6. admin Says:

You can read the statement, I linked to it. Wasn’t aware I had to quote the entire statement when it’s…you know…online. And linked.

The rest of the statement was just as predictable. It’s the same thing every PR department and SID or agent puts together when their client needs spin.

As for whether she “deserves” the scrutiny….well, how long have you been with the firm? This is our society today. Freak shows. And we talk (primarily) soccer here.

She not only deserves scrutiny, she deserved to get Hope Solo-d.

No need to be so sensitive. I wasn’t criticizing you for posting this on your blog, which maybe 30 or 40 people will see. But I think it was a bit much for ESPN to make a national story. What Lambert did was really awful but the game seems to have gotten way out of hand. For one thing Lambert’s pony tail grab was a response (though way too excessive) to a BYU player grabbing her private area.

The officials really appeared to let this game deteriorate, and I would question whether they should be working soccer games at any level. The coaches also should have done something when they saw what was happening.

What about the ref’s complete and utter failure to properly ref the game and keep any sort of control? Yes, the NM player was rightly suspended. But the entire ref crew should also be suspended. A few yellows earlier in the game would have prevented a lot of other cheap shots (by both teams).

    Kenn,

I’m completely with you on this, but I’m enraged that others let this happen. I think New Mexico needs to sanction Kit Vela, their “coach” (and I use that term very loosely), and the Mountain West needs to fire all four of the officials.

  10. Kim Says:

First, the boilerplate apology…..Kenn’s right, it is indicative of her character. When you pull off 8 dirty plays throughout the game (that were caught on tape) that’s not the heat of the moment, that’s how you play.

Second, yes she should get this much scrutiny. It’s about sportsmanship and what’s right and wrong. This crap should be stamped out of sports (and the society that reflects it). It’s just uncool. Pillory her so others learn.

Third, the refs and other team officials should be held accountable, too. Credit to the BYU team for not descending to her level in retaliation.

    Fourth, millions read this blog.

OK, I went a bit far on the fourth point.

I just have a question, how in the world was she not ejected from this game?
